The Black House In Chiang Rai, Baan Dam Is An Unusual Place To Visit!!.
I had heard good things about ‘The Black House’ in Chiang Rai, otherwise known as ‘Baan Dam’ in Thai. The grounds span a large area and are filled with many interesting buildings, again adorned with lots of dead things, an entire brown bear made into a bed sheet a whole elephant skeleton, and a torture chamber to name just a few.
It is the proud work of Thawan Duchanee, a Chiang Rai born Thai artist who has developed a style of work representing the darkness in humanity. With lots of red and black hues, skins, skulls and various other animal parts made into eerie artwork.
Unlike the better known and popular Chiang Rai attraction, The White Temple, there is no religious mmeaning to The Black House It feels more like a museum interspersed with interesting architecture, sculptures and art.
The Black House is open from 9am until 5pm but shuts for an hour at mid day, not sure of the reason for this, but we sat in the small cafe and refreshed ourselves with iced sodas while we waited, with Eden at our feet, making friends with the cafe owners little fluffy dog.

The market sets up along Thanalai Road in the center of town and is within easy walking distance of most city hotels and not far from Chiang Rai’s Night Bazaar. This market only runs on a Saturday with the stalls setting up late afternoon and the market will run through to around 10:30pm.
Thanalai Road is located in the Chinese quarter of the City. Saturday night the Chinese lanterns are lit, traffic diverted, and the the whole feel of the street changes. It becomes very very busy from 6pm onwards. You can see and experience Street dancing, Thai street food, Thai Music, Karaoke, market stalls and much more. Lots of hand made souveniers at reasonable prices. Allow 2 hours to walk the street both ways. A must if you are visiting Chiang Rai over a weekend. It`s a great place to go and to see.
A beautiful and glittering clock tower of Chiang rai recently built by well known artist Chaloemchai Kositpipat. The tower is located in central part of Chiang rai city on pahonyothin and banpaprakarn intersection. Resembling the white temple of Chiang rai, the clock tower was erected to celebrate his majesty the king in 2008. Every evening at the beginning of each hour, the clock tower attracts local visitors with its light and sound display. It is wonderful to see curtan at night time.
