If you have suggestions, cheap and good places, here are some:

Khao Soi at Ban Sanphan: Kind of noodle soup, Chiangmai style, 40 baht. On this picture, they added chicken an additional 10 baht.

The place is Ban Sanphan.
http://www.isaan.com/en/about/nakhon-ratchasima-korat/restaurants/thai/baan-sanphan.html

Sarungkham restaurant makes also Khao Soi:

Bibi Restaurant is owned by a Pakistani guy who doesn't speak English or Thai, and his Thai wife.

They mostly serve Thai food, quite cheap. But they also have some Indian dishes IF YOU ARE LUCKY. For example, this chicken biryani, was 30 baht including a soup + some cucumbers + a sauce. (You don't see the cucumbers and the sauce in the picture). All included for 30 baht!

The yellow rice was DELICIOUS. It's served almost cold but very tasty. Never had this before, as good as this, in Korat. The location of this place is on Pho Klang Road, very close to Isaan Lawyers. If you come from Yamo, drive up to Isaan Lawyers, continue until the red light intersection. It's the third or fourth building on your left.

Info about Bibi

Vegetarian food at Jeh Guan Eem, 40 or 45 baht, can't remember!

http://www.isaan.com/en/about/nakhon-ratchasima-korat/restaurants/others/jeh-guan-eem-vegetarian.html

There is some rice under the 2 brown 'cakes'. It was similar to chicken but vegetarian. Noodles, soup. The soup is called 'Tom Jeun' in Thai but in this case, the replace the pork by tofu.

This restaurant is just beside George and Dragon, maybe 5 houses beside, same side.

They offer the following and much more, all very nice:

- Ka Proaw Gai, Ka Proaw Moo (Spicy Chicken or pork with herbs (Ka proaw) on rice
- Ka na moo krub (vegetable with crispy pork)
- Khao moo krub (crispy pork on top of rice)

Ka proaw Gai, eaten at George and Dragon. 30 baht.

You can order from George and Dragon without any additional fee. They will serve you there, and their Thai food is very good.

(If you don't like spicy food, it might not be for you...ask maybe Fried rice!)

If you like to go out or work at night, and want to have a simple but good meal, try this place: Raan Ahaan Ya.

"Ya" means Grandmother. When I asked the name of the place, they told me relating to the owner.

This is the front. The picture is not very good because of neon light[/center]

A friend of mine used to go there for a long long time. They move about a year ago and they are now located JUST beside LA BEAU SPA... or IN FRONT of Osake massage parlor.

The place is popular and opens around 1am. Not sure what time it closes.

I always have PENANG (curry) MOO (pork), a kind of Curry pork, very tasty, with rice and some sweet sausages sliced beside. It cost about 35 baht and will fill you up.

The sausages are on the left. Also, first pot on the left is the PENANG MOO

This topic was very popular before. I lost many pictures after a bug, but was able to retrieve some of backups and others.

Now, I met people asking me where are these places, because they have problems to find them. Here's a map and some instructions.

This is only the center of the city. As you can see, Yamo monument is at #1.

2. This is a noodle shop (Kuay Tiao) opening at about 5pm. It's the best Chinese noodles soup in Korat and it's very popular. Tables are on the sidewalk. The make delicious kind of ravioli... really nice.

3. That's a 39 baht chicken pork and steak restaurant. With salad, mayonnaise, for 39 baht, VERY nice. They open at about 3pm. It's orange inside, close to Isaan Lawyers, opposite side.

4. Nok Noy is a special restaurant. They open around 3am until maybe 10am. So, it's a very late night or early bird place! They have all kinds of dishes. Good and cheap. I was told the PLA DOOK TOD PRIK KEANG is delicious. I love the big fried meatballs...

For more info:

http://www.isaan.com/en/forum/Restaurants-and-eating-out-in-Korat/2265-Breakfast-in-Korat--Nok-Noys-place.html

5. Bibi restaurant serves an EXCELLENT Biryani rice, that you can have with fried chicken and a soup for about 35 baht. Best rice in town (to my opinion). It's owned by a Pakistani guy.

For more info see above and here:
http://www.isaan.com/en/about/nakhon-ratchasima-korat/restaurants/others/bibi-restaurant-thai-some-pakistani.html

6. There are two laros restaurants and they have Vietnamese food. Open on day time only. Closing at about 4pm. They have some packages for take out. Great to eat if you are 2,3,4...

For pictures and info, click here:

http://www.isaan.com/en/about/nakhon-ratchasima-korat/restaurants/others/laros-1.html

7. A famous place to eat Khao Man Gai in Korat. That's rice over some rice, with normally a sauce. Just beside Klang Plaza 1.

8. About 3 shops from George and Dragon, there is a place doing excellent Ka Prao Moo Krup. That's Spicy Crispy pork on rice with sweet basil. But they also have great other dishes. Tables inside and outside, it's very popular from 5pm to midnight.

You will find more info above in this topic.

9. Loom Pee means uncle. That's how I call this guy. I know him for several years. He used to make a delicious Jao Hon... That's the Isaan version of Chinese fondue. You cook your meat into a spicy broth. And you dip in some sauce. I am not sure if he still does it. Anyway, he has a small stand (not really a restaurant) opposite George and Dragon, beside Tokyo hotel, in the small lane (looks like a park). He does excellent Moo Ded deo, or Moo Tod (fried pork). And many others. He used to have a place in Korat called Yasothon something...

10. Khao Tom Jamsurang has been there for more than 20 years. Very popular place for Khao Tom and I like their vegetable dishes. I think it opens around evening and it stays open quite late.

11. Night Bazaar 2 is not the one near Chez Andy. It's near Pollan Gate, the gate opposite Yamo. Or near Iyara hotel. There are tons of food stands. You eat what you want. I like the Pla Tap tip Sam Rot. About 100 baht. It's a fish deep fried with a kind of sweet and sour sauce. One of the biggest stand makes it. There are 2 young guys cooking (under 40 y-o).

12. The Lasagna and Pizza at saveone is not expensive and taste good. Great value if you are looking for foreign food.

More info here:
http://www.isaan.com/en/forum/Restaurants-and-eating-out-in-Korat/1835-Excellent-lasagna-at-saveone.html

13. Baan San Phan is a Chiangmai food restaurant. DELICIOUS. Try Khao Soi, and everything else. Open only on day time. It's on the street IN FRONT of Bangkok Hospital. Not easy to find. But one great place in Korat.\

For more info and pictures:
http://www.isaan.com/en/about/nakhon-ratchasima-korat/restaurants/thai/baan-sanphan.html

Tek Ha restaurant.

That's the RED spot.

This is a famous intersection in Korat, with a very old Chinese restaurant. They say it's Chinese...
I like to stay MOO SATAY (Pork Satay with a sauce and salad) and I had Khao Na Phet before there... long time ago. It's still a very popular place for lunch for Thais...So, it has to be good!

For more info:
http://www.isaan.com/en/forum/General-discussion/1771-Tek-Ha-intersection.html

Bua Pan restaurant.

That's an excellent Isaan Restaurant. Open day time until 8pm. The LAP PHET (Lap, spicy isaan minced meat in a kind of salad, in that one, duck) is delicious. Bua Pan should be a little bit outside this map, but also there. In the small street in front of Siri Hotel, behind the Tassaban

Ban Pan is the BLUE spot.

This place is called COFFEE and CAKE. I go there once in a while for at least 5 years...
There are a lot of students going there. Food is cheap. They serve coffee, Thai and foreign food.
Don't expect the spaghetti or tuna salad to be outstanding, but for about 50 baht, you will have a decent meal.

This is the front of the restaurant. There are only few tables inside. Some on the second floor.

It's located on a small street, in front of Suranaree Witthaya. Not the street of Big Chili, but around there. I think it's Prajak Road. I will put it on the Korat restaurants map soon...

That was a tuna salad at 50 baht. The salad dressing is Thai style (mayonaise, probably yogurt and sugar) but you have a nice plate for the price.

Most people do go there for the coffee and the cake...I go there because it's a nice, peaceful, quiet place. It's cheap, there is always people there, it's clean.

(We lost many pictures on posts before. I will try to correct that soon. I also corrected some links above today. We lost the pictures when we were hacked about 8 months ago.)

Do you know MANLO restaurant? This is one of the oldest restaurant in Korat.

This place is located near Wat Sa Kaeow.

It is on San Prasit Rd.

When I say it is one of the oldest, this restaurant opened about 40 years ago. It is small, not fancy, but they really have delicious Pad Thai and Pad Mee Korat. Pad Mee are some Korat Noodles, fried, with some vegetables.

My wife has friends from Bangkok who LOVES to eat there. I am not kidding. Each time they are in Korat, they go to Manlo. Not sure why, but they often called it "Super Man Lo".

Above is my Pad Mee Korat. This is about 25 baht. If ask for take out, they put it in a nice and beautiful banana leaf.

There are numerous newspaper on the wall talking about this restaurant. If you want to have cheap and authentic Thai food, try that place.

This is a small place at night bazaar 2. That's not the night bazaar in middle of Korat, but the one near Pratu Pollan, or the gate closer to Ban Korat or hermitage hotel. It's actually near Teenee Korat or Iyara Hotel. It opens at 6pm.

This is the front. It's one of the biggest place in the street. Remember it opens around 6pm and closes around 9 or 10pm.

The menu is only in Thai, quite cheap. But you will pay more than 50 baht if you want to try what I like there.

This is Oy Lai. Spicy shells...my wife makes the best ones, but these are good.

But that's what I like: Pla Ka Pong Tod Sam Rot.
Pla Ka Pong is the kind of fish. You can have Pla Tap tim too.
Tod is deep friend.
And Sam Rot means 3 flavors, sweet, spicy and sour. (I think sour...or is it salty?)

Anyway, this fish is AMAZING and you eat it in the street. I can't remember the price but around 150 baht. You can have 1 fish for 2 people, eat rice and water. That will be cheap AND tasty.

And it's normally a guy that cooks...

This is another noodle shop, but this one is famous in Korat. Anyone that was living in Korat, near Yamo and is about 35 yo and older knows this place. It is called "Luk Chin Chum Phon". "Chum Phon" is the name of the city gate behind Yamo. "Luk Chin" are small "balls" of fish, pork or others. This is the location of that restaurant: (green arrow)

My wife used to go there more than 20 years ago. And it hasn't changed. You are not looking for a fancy place but a nice soup at 30 baht!

Their speciality is called "Sen Mee Luk Chin Neua Sot" or noodle soup with fresh beef and some "meatballs" (Luk Chin). That's the dish below, for 30 baht.

Jack's restaurant, eating cheap in Korat
« Reply #11 on: October 29, 2012, 12:00:26 PM »
Another good place to eat cheap is JACK's restaurant (Raan ahaan Jack). I know that place for years but now, it is closer to our office and go often. Many foreigners that I know, often teachers, also like that place.

The location is here:

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=14.964251,102.070817

You can have for example rice + Gai Pad Med Ma muang (Chicken with cashews) for 40 baht.
This place is quite popular on lunch time. I never been after 5pm and I don't know what time they close.
They are link to Steve (Koratchef)'s family to what I understand. A place to try for lunch.
I also have often a simple chicken with garlic (Gai Ka tee-aim)

That sign is outside:

This is the place, nothing fancy:

This is the chicken cashew and rice for 40 baht.

This noodle restaurant is called Homhocha, which means "good smell and good taste" or something like that. It is opened for 43 years. It used to be only 1 shop house wide, and now, it is 3 shop houses wide.

It opens at 7am and close at 4pm. You can have a tasty soup for 35 or 40 baht.

Pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50651722@N03/sets/72157632447314001/

It is exactly in front of the only gas station in old Korat. Or beside Dior Karaoke.
It is more or less at the green arrow:

This is "Khao Na Phet". Some duck on rice, for 40 baht. One of my favorite street food in Thailand. This one is exceptional, just beside "Check Inn" or almost in front of Sri Pattana Hotel.
